Bates – Recondo Jungle Boots

Published on July 15, 2014 by in News

Bates Logo

Bates Footwear, a division of Wolverine Worldwide (NYSE: WWW) announces the launch of the Recondo jungle boot a low-absorption, quick drying, durable solution designed to provide secure footing in multi-terrain jungle regions. Named for the Reconnaissance and Commando Training Course developed in the 1950s at Fort Campbell, the Recondo meets the need for a Berry Compliant jungle/tropical combat boot for today’s warfighters and peacekeepers.

To meet the demands of today’s evolving asymmetrical threats, Bates partnered with the United States Army Special Forces Command (USASFC) to develop the Recondo. Bates received valuable performance feedback after the 75th Army Ranger Regiment tested the Recondo in Central America during the winter of 2014. As a result, the Recondo boot delivers an exclusive lighter weight, quick drying durable leather and textile upper and has been designed to provide the best breathability possible for the spectrum of jungle combat situations.

Bates Recondo

“The Recondo provides a much needed jungle boot update for the next generation of our armed services,” said Bates Footwear President Onder Ors. “Based on the specific feedback we received from our development partners in the Special Operations Forces, Bates has created the only boot specifically engineered for hot, wet and humid combat environments common in tropical regions.”

The Recondo boot is made with Wolverine Warrior Leather™ which is lighter more durable, breathable, and is water, stain, and oil resistant. The MultiCam® ripstop nylon fabric enhances performance as it is lightweight, abrasion resistant, and highly durable. The blended upper material is light, strong, comfortable and has near infrared properties (NIR) making the boot less visible in low light environments.

The Recondo utilizes a unique lacing system developed based on feedback from operators and incorporates Bates’ many years of experience with lace-to-toe styles. This assures that all users can easily utilize the speed lace system and achieve proper fit and closure.

The design of the solid rubber outsole is the Vibram® Mutant, which has a deeper, more aggressive lug depth for off road traction, a multi-directional leading edged that enhance slip-resisting properties, and a rounded heel for natural touch down. This sole design has also incorporated a customized rubber compound that is durable enough to withstand Special Operations Forces use in hot weather, temperate weather, and mountainous operational environments.

The Recondo will be available for purchase beginning Fall 2014.

Review: Lowa Zephyr GTX High

Lowa Zephyr GTX

I don’t like reviewing boots until I’ve had chance to wear them in properly through various environments and put some good miles on them. Seeing as I’ve owned these boots for about a year and figured it about time I gave them a write up.

I’m a creature of habit and the first thing I do with any boots is get them on, lace them up and take them round the same 5 mile route. This gives me a common ground on which to get my first impressions.

Before I even got these out of the box you can’t help but notice the feather weight of these boots. I mean for a second I thought the box might actually be empty! They weigh in at a ridiculously light 1100g (approx).. which compared to my previous Lowa Desert Elites (circa 1500g) is practically lighter than air!

On my feet the first thing I noticed was the flex, they almost instantly take to the shape of your foot without any unnecessary rigidity in the usual high mobility spots (bridge of the foot, Achilles areas), right then I knew I’d got myself some tactical slippers!

I took them out on the 5 mile loop expecting some rubbing and aching as is usual with all new boots, but a few hours later on my return there wasn’t a sign of any discomfort at all. Moreover they’d stood up to the traditional Manchester monsoon excellently with no leaking or seeping at all (Note: as is common with most boots the GTX indicates Gortex lining).

Since then I’ve used these on 3 Milsim Ops (100+ hours) and as many training events enduring weather varying from -7 degrees blizzard, torrential rain, + 27 degrees sunshine and about everything in between. Not once have my feet felt anything but lovingly hugged by an absurd amount of comfort, and even more surprising, a higher than expected level of support from a boot so flexible and light. I can only put this down to the way the sole section form up the side of the boot cradling the foot.

As you can see from the photos the boots have held up remarkably well showing no significant signs of wear and zero signs of damage at all. Even the interior is still as good as new with no signs of wear and tear.

I’ve used nothing but Lowa boots for 4 years (which is only 3 pairs of Lowa’s all of which are still going strong) and these are the best i’ve had to date by quite some way.

They excel in terms of comfort, durability and haven’t failed to offer support through all the environments I’ve used them in to date. In conclusion they’re a lightweight boot with a heavyweight punch!

Highly recommended combat creepers!

Review: Voodoo Tactical Europe Phantom Gloves

Published on June 11, 2014 by in Partners, Reviews

Dusting off the review writing and thought i’d put a few words together about the Voodoo Tactical Europe Phantom gloves.

Prior to these i’d be using a mixture of HWI and Mechanix gloves but I’ve had issues with both; HWI decided to put all their seems at the tips of the fingers.. not clever, and the Mechanix are great gloves but need something warmer for winter!

voodoo phantom

The Phantom seemed like a good choice, similar style to the HWI i’d used (Hard knuckle, leather palms) and thicker than the Mechanix Originals, plus i’d not seen many about so thought i’d give them a try.

First impressions the fit well, now this sounds stupid i know, they fit like a glove.. of course the fit well, but this often isn’t the case. I’ve found a lot of gloves (certainly some of the cheaper / clone options) fit well on the palms but have bizarre finger lengths (either too long or too short) making them almost unusable for any length of time. This fit snuggly all over, offer no rotating round or pinch points at all.

The thickness shows instantly, there’s no doubting they’re a sturdy well made glove. So much so I had to take the time to break them in before i could use them properly for the more fidgety tasks. It took about 2 training sessions for them to take form and be what i considered broke in so not too long at all.

The knuckle section on the back is a good size, compared to the glove, so as not to over lap too much or interfere with range of movement at all.

voodoo phantom2

They’ve took a battering from climbing over walls at STANTA (possibly the most abrasive substance on earth and killer of previous gloves!), and stood up to a considerable amount of pyro abuse during training events with not sign of excessive wear, if anything i think the palms are fairing up a lot better than expected.

All in all these gloves have exceeded expectations they offer excellent protection whilst not compromising comfort, movement or feeling. They’re warm, that’s what I needed, but not so warm as to cause issues during the rare sunshine, warm enough so that you don’t have to switch them out at night or in the rain. The durability is spot on and the quality of materials is unquestionable.

I’ve got me some new go to gloves!
